Frequently asked
questions

There are two ways you can convert a color image to a new grayscale image using Colorcinch image processing tools.

Option 1: Navigate to Edit – Color and drag the Saturation slider all the way down to zero to desaturate and remove all colors from the input image.

Option 2: Navigate to Filters and choose from a wide variety of grayscale filters. You can further fine-tune the filter of your choosing by clicking on Settings and making the desired adjustments. Changing your images to grayscale is easy! Once you’ve changed the color, you can download your image and use it anywhere you like.

To achieve a retro black and white film look, try experimenting with a handful of vintage presets from the filters category. A grayscale image can have a really powerful image and add solemnity to a moment.

If you want to reduce the strength of any black and white filter, be sure to desaturate the image first before applying the grayscale image filter. This will prevent colors from showing through when the strength of the filter is reduced.

Next, select the filter of your choice and try adjusting its attributes in Settings. When you’re happy with the result, click on Apply. Congratulations, you have created a grayscale image!

Some of the black and white filters found in our library mimic film grain and give you control over Grain Amount and Grain Size. Take advantage of these options to introduce grain in your grayscale image.

To access grain controls, click on the Settings icon of the desired black and white filter. But keep in mind that grain control is not available on all presets.

If you feel that your grayscale image appears washed out after adding a black and white filter, try increasing its contrast.

Simply navigate to Edit – Exposure and adjust the Contrast slider to the right to refine your grayscale image.

A grayscale image can create a vintage feel. In some cases, your image will appear more solemn or professional when you add a grayscale tone. Some people see grayscale as representing a bygone era or even grief.

You can convert an entire image, or create something new by combining one color picture with a different greyscale picture, even without design experience.

You can do a lot within Colorcinch! Use our tools to adjust the light intensity or saturation of an image, remove the image background, add text and other effects, create a custom masterpiece, or watermark the images you’ve used to protect your copyright directly in your browser.

You’ll find the best features, tools and effects for image processing on Colorcinch. No software download or credit card information is required! You can download your finished file in a number of formats (e.g. png or jpg) and use your image elsewhere.

Remember to save the version of the image that you like best before making changes so you can go back to it.

When you grayscale an image, the value of each pixel represents the intensity format of the light in the image. A grayscale image usually represents only the darkest black to the lightest white, so your grayscale image really only represents black, white and gray. The gray in a grayscale image has the most levels.

Grayscale is often used in image recognition software that you’ll see banks and apps use online. Grayscale means that descriptions are extracted from an image. Grayscale simplifies the algorithm and reduces the computational power requirement when an image is used.

If you need to change a grayscale image to color, you can use RGB color codes. Just use black and white as the input and then change the colors using our color picker to adjust the RGB value.
